In A People House

Today we had an unexpected visitor at our home. Our back door was propped open for a brief time as we were taking out the trash, but it was just enough time for a little bird to slip in. I didn't notice it at first, but Christopher did. He didn't mention it until about 20 minutes later...

I was sitting out front on the bench reading books to Levi. Haven and Christopher seemed to be having a heated discussion as they dug a hole together in the yard. Zachary was happily entertaining himself in the comfort of the air-conditioned house. Finally Christopher came over and said to me with a pout: "Mommy, Haven doesn't believe me. Do YOU believe me?"

Not knowing to what specifically he was referring, I asked him, "Are you telling the truth?" He smiled and nodded his head so I replied, "Well, then I do believe you."

It wasn't until a few minutes later when my curiosity got the best of me. I paused to put our book down and asked Christopher what it was that Haven didn't believe. It was then that he told me that there was a bird in the house!

For the next 30 minutes Zachary and I came up with our plan to get the frantic bird to fly safely out of the house while our 3 younger observers thoroughly enjoyed the show. Levi was adorable as he stood in amazement and pointed for us the direction that the bird had flown last. When we finally succeeded in getting our little visitor to go back home, Christopher, Levi and I sat back down on our front bench with our stack of books and read the selection we found most fitting for the moment: "In A People House" by Theo LeSieg.
